NJ STATE BAR FOUNDATION HONORS RETIRED NJ SUPREME COURT JUSTICE DANIEL J. O’HERN WITH HIGHEST AWARD FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO IMPROVING STATE’S LEGAL SYSTEM


Little Silver Resident Now Focuses on Appellate Practice, Trial Practice, Alternative Dispute Resolution and Mediation at Becker Meisel LLC

 

LIVINGSTON, N.J., Oct. 16, 2007 – In recognition of his longstanding dedication to the New Jersey legal system, Retired New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Daniel J. O’Hern has been awarded the 2007 Medal of Honor Award by the New Jersey State Bar Foundation (NJSBF). O’Hern, who resides in Little Silver, N.J., has a rich history of public service at the municipal and state level including his 19 years on the Supreme Court.

“I am honored to receive this award because it comes from the practicing attorneys in our state,” said O’Hern, who now serves as special counsel to the law firm of Becker Meisel LLC, which has offices in Livingston and Shrewsbury, N.J., as well as Manhattan. The Retired Justice is a member of the Firm’s litigation group, where he focuses on appellate practice, trial practice, alternative dispute resolution and mediation.

From 1981 to 2000, he was a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court, nominated by Governors Brendan Byrne and Thomas Kean. O’Hern authored 231 opinions during that time.

Well-respected for his commitment to improving the legal system, O’Hern is frequently appointed to leadership roles. He recently served as Special Ethics Counsel to Governor Richard J. Codey to recommend Ethics Reform Recommendations for the Executive Branch of New Jersey Government and as Hearing Officer for the Department of Treasury in connection with a Lottery Services contract. O’Hern also served as the court-appointed mediator in the settlement of a federal lawsuit regarding immigrant rights in Freehold, N.J. He acted on a pro-bono basis in this settlement, which established standards and procedures that will find applications across the country.
