LIVINGSTON, N.J., Nov. 8, 2007 – Stacey Meisel, Esq., founding member of the Livingston, N.J.-based law firm Becker Meisel LLC, recently participated in the Essex County Home Ownership Clinic, which was sponsored by Senator Ronald L. Rice. A member of the Volunteer Lawyers for Justice (VLJ), Meisel provided pro-bono legal advice on bankruptcy and home ownership issues to many of the more than 75 attendees. This free clinic took place in Newark, where foreclosures are on the rise.
“This first-of-its-kind program by Senator Rice enables our community members to make informed decisions on the major financial issue of home ownership,” said Meisel, who has been practicing in the area of bankruptcy, insolvency and creditors’ rights since 1994. Widely-regarded as a top corporate bankruptcy attorney, Meisel was recently recognized as one of the New Jersey Law Journal’s prestigious "40 Under 40."

Founded in 2001, VLJ is a program of the Legal Services Foundation of Essex County. Meisel, who began working with the VLJ in 2002, was named the non-profit’s "July 2007 Pro Bono Attorney of the Month" and also the “2003 Volunteer of the Year.” As a VLJ volunteer, Meisel, who resides in Montclair, N.J., assists low-income individuals with bankruptcy proceedings on a pro-bono basis.
In addition to the VLJ, a host of other organizations offered their services to attendees of the Essex County Home Ownership Clinic. Those included Freddie Mac, Legal Services of New Jersey, Essex County Division of Community Action and the Essex County Division of Housing and Community Development.Senator Rice created this clinic in response to the overwhelming need for free advice on the myriad of financial and legal concerns involving home ownership. A Senate aid to Senator Rice noted that, "Thanks to the efforts of our volunteers, such as Stacey Meisel, our attendees are now equipped with this essential information."
