Stacey L. Meisel is a founding member of Becker Meisel and co-chairs the Firm's bankruptcy, insolvency and creditors' rights practice group.
She has been practicing in the area of insolvency since 1994, focusing on bankruptcy, state court receiverships, debtor and creditors' rights, in and out-of-court wind-downs, and commercial law. She frequently represents Chapter 11 debtors, Chapter 7 and 11 Trustees, individual creditors, landlords and other interested parties in bankruptcy proceedings in New Jersey and other states.
In 1997, she became the youngest serving member on the New Jersey Panel of Bankruptcy Trustees appointed by the United States Department of Justice. As a trustee, she is often confronted with the decision of whether it is in the best interest of creditors and shareholders to attempt to reorganize a company under new management or liquidate its assets in an orderly fashion. In her role as trustee, she has (1) conducted dozens of internal investigations into the propriety of acts of past management, officers and directors and (2) overseen financial audits of the books and records of numerous corporations for the purposes of tracing finances and investigating potential fraudulent or otherwise improper transfers of assets. She has been instrumental in the sale and distribution of proceeds to creditors and shareholders of tens of millions of dollars of assets including; equipment, inventory, commodities, securities and real property in both bankruptcy and state court proceedings. Over the past eleven years, she has been appointed as trustee over entities in the following industries: real estate, retail, manufacturing, professional services, technology, health care, food and restaurant. In addition, she has been appointed to serve as a Liquidating Trustee, Provisional Director and Receiver in state court proceedings.
In 2006, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit appointed Ms. Meisel to an eleven-person Merit Selection Committee, which was responsible for vetting all candidates and ultimately recommending three candidates to the Third Circuit.
Ms. Meisel co-authored West Publishing's "Consumer Bankruptcy Manual" in 2008 and frequently writes articles for a number of legal publications. She is a contributing editor for the American Bankruptcy Institute's Third Circuit Decisions Update. She also lectures on bankruptcy-related topics at seminars sponsored by the New Jersey Institute of Continuing Education, the New Jersey State Bar Association, and Lorman.
